When looking for a professional counsellor or psychotherapist, it is important to ensure that they are licensed, insured, and have a background in the area of counselling and psychotherapy. It is also helpful to interview several therapists before making a decision. The National Association of Therapy and Counselling Services (NATS) conducts periodic assessments to determine the effectiveness of the counselling and psychotherapy sector. The most recent assessment, conducted in 2007, showed that there was an increasing demand for the services provided by Canadian mental health counsellors. According to the report, the demand for counselling and psychotherapy services is expected to grow at a faster rate in future years.


Most of the time, couples who seek counselling and psychotherapy services are experiencing some kind of gap in their relationship, such as stress, anger, depression, anxiety, or marital problems. As a therapist will guide the couple through the process of discussing the issues, they can begin to work on changing their negative thoughts and behaviors to create a more positive, fulfilling and dynamic relationship.
